App Store Screenshot Sizes: The Complete Guide for 2025

Screenshot size requirements are one of the most frustrating parts of submitting an app. The rules change with every new device generation, the error messages in App Store Connect are cryptic, and getting it wrong means a rejected submission.

This guide covers every required and recommended size for 2025, for both iOS and Android.

iOS Screenshot Requirements

Apple requires screenshots for specific display sizes. If you submit screenshots for a larger display, Apple will scale them down for smaller devices — so in many cases, you only need to submit for the largest size in each category.

iPhone

6.9-inch Display (iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Plus):

  • Required: Yes (if you want to appear on these devices without scaling)
  • Portrait: 1320 × 2868 px
  • Landscape: 2868 × 1320 px
  • This is currently the largest iPhone display and the recommended primary submission size

6.7-inch Display (iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro Max):

  • Portrait: 1290 × 2796 px
  • Landscape: 2796 × 1290 px
  • Apple will use 6.9-inch screenshots on these devices if submitted; no separate upload required

6.5-inch Display (iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max):

  • Portrait: 1242 × 2688 px
  • Landscape: 2688 × 1242 px
  • Required if you do not submit 6.9-inch screenshots

6.1-inch Display (iPhone 16, iPhone 15, iPhone 14):

  • Portrait: 1179 × 2556 px (iPhone 16) / 1170 × 2532 px (iPhone 14/15)
  • Apple scales from 6.9-inch for these sizes

5.5-inch Display (iPhone 8 Plus):

  • Portrait: 1242 × 2208 px
  • Landscape: 2208 × 1242 px
  • Required if you support iOS versions that run on this device

Practical advice: Submit 6.9-inch and 5.5-inch screenshots. Those two sizes cover the App Store's display size requirements for virtually all active devices, with Apple handling scaling for everything in between.

iPad

13-inch Display (iPad Pro M4):

  • Portrait: 2064 × 2752 px
  • Landscape: 2752 × 2064 px

12.9-inch Display (iPad Pro, earlier generations):

  • Portrait: 2048 × 2732 px
  • Landscape: 2732 × 2048 px

11-inch Display (iPad Pro, iPad Air):

  • Portrait: 1668 × 2388 px
  • Landscape: 2388 × 1668 px

10.5-inch Display:

  • Portrait: 1668 × 2224 px

9.7-inch Display:

  • Portrait: 1536 × 2048 px
  • Landscape: 2048 × 1536 px

Practical advice: Submit 13-inch or 12.9-inch screenshots. Apple scales them for smaller iPads.

Screenshot File Requirements (iOS)

  • Format: JPG or PNG (no alpha channel for JPG)
  • Maximum file size: 500MB per screenshot (in practice, keep under 10MB for upload speed)
  • Minimum resolution: screenshots must be at least 72 DPI
  • You can submit up to 10 screenshots per display size
  • At least 1 screenshot required per supported display size

macOS Screenshot Requirements (Catalyst / Native)

If your app supports macOS via Mac Catalyst or as a native Mac app:

  • Minimum size: 1280 × 800 px
  • Maximum size: 2560 × 1600 px
  • Format: JPG or PNG
  • Up to 10 screenshots per app

tvOS Screenshot Requirements

  • 1920 × 1080 px (16:9)
  • Format: JPG or PNG

Google Play Screenshot Requirements

Google Play has simpler requirements than the App Store, with more flexibility in dimensions.

Phone Screenshots

  • Minimum: 320 px on any side
  • Maximum: 3840 px on any side
  • Aspect ratio: between 16:9 and 9:16
  • Format: JPG or PNG
  • Minimum 2 screenshots required; maximum 8

Recommended size: 1080 × 1920 px (portrait) — this matches the display resolution of most modern Android phones and renders crisply on high-DPI screens.

Tablet Screenshots (7-inch)

  • Minimum: 320 px on any side
  • Maximum: 3840 px on any side
  • Recommended: 1200 × 1920 px (portrait)

Tablet Screenshots (10-inch)

  • Recommended: 1600 × 2560 px (portrait)

Feature Graphic

The feature graphic is the banner displayed at the top of your Play Store listing. It's required for featuring and highly recommended for all apps.

  • Size: 1024 × 500 px (required, exact dimensions)
  • Format: JPG or PNG
  • This is separate from your screenshots

Chromebook Screenshots

  • Minimum: 1080 px on the longest side
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9

Designing for All Sizes Efficiently

Creating separate designs for every required size is impractical for most indie developers. Here's an efficient approach:

Design at the largest required size. Start with 1320 × 2868 px for iPhone and 1080 × 1920 px for Android. If your design is clean at this resolution, it will look good scaled down.

Use vector text and elements where possible. Vector-based headlines and UI elements scale without quality loss. If you're using raster screenshots of your app, ensure they're captured at the highest available resolution.

Keep safe zones in mind. Don't place critical text or the device frame too close to the edges. When Apple scales your 6.9-inch screenshots for smaller devices, anything near the edge may be cropped.

Test at small sizes. After designing, view your screenshots at 200px wide — roughly the size they appear in mobile search results. If text is unreadable or the device frame disappears, your design needs adjustment before worrying about pixel dimensions.

Common Submission Errors and Fixes

"Screenshot does not match required dimensions": The most common cause is rounding — designing at 1242 × 2688 when the requirement is 1290 × 2796. Double-check your canvas size matches the spec exactly.

"Screenshot contains an alpha channel": JPG files don't support transparency; PNG files do. If you're exporting transparent backgrounds as JPG, the alpha channel error appears. Export as PNG, or add a solid background before exporting as JPG.

"Screenshot is blurry or low quality": Usually caused by saving at less than full resolution. Export at 1× from your design tool, not scaled down.

"App shows status bar content in screenshots": Apple will sometimes flag screenshots that show real carrier names, full battery percentages, or other sensitive status bar content. Use a clean status bar (9:41 AM, full signal, full battery, no carrier name) for all screenshots.

Keeping Up with Changes

Apple updates its display size requirements with every new iPhone generation, typically in September. Check App Store Connect's screenshot requirements page each fall to ensure your submission specs are current.

The safest long-term strategy: design your screenshots at a resolution higher than currently required. A design at 1500 × 3000 px can be scaled down to any current requirement without quality loss, and has headroom for new display sizes without a full redesign.
